If you are a product, then resume is like your advertisement. Resume is a self advertisement which helps you get the kind of job you desired. Resume contains the summary of your abilities and achievements. Resume is like a document of your talent, skills and capabilities. The selection process of a person for a post is based on his/her resume. If the resume is good and if he/she performs well in their interview then they get recruited. A good resume is one which gets you recruited.

Resumes can be written in any format. Based on the necessity we can choose one. There are three basic formats of resumes. They are as follows:

  2. Functional resume
  3. Hybrid resume
  • In chronological resume format, it follows from the most recent to next recent experience or qualification. It concentrates on skills, academics and experience. The contents are presented in reverse chronological order.
  • If you are a person who had gone through career change or if you have hiatus in your employment history then functional resume format suits you just fine. The functional resume format highlights the skills rather than your experience. The skills of a person are stated first followed by the experience.
  • The hybrid resume format is a mix of chronological and functional resume format. The employment details follow the reverse chronological order. The skills are written before employment details in this format of resume.

Here, comes the question what is the best format for writing a resume? Depending upon the kind of job and keeping your experience details in mind you can choose any kind of resume format. The chronological resumes are best suited for the freshly graduated students. The functional resumes are suited for people who have experience and who wish to change their job.

If you are a freshly graduated student, chronological format is best suited for you. The chronological resume format can be written as follows:

  1. Start your resume with your career objectives. Mention your career objective clearly.
  2. Before writing your career objectives, give your contact information along with your current address.
  3. Mention your skills and abilities and highlight few which you think are unique.
  4. Give your educational history; mention the qualifications along with the institution names, years and scores. Tabulate them if you want to.
  5. List your curricular and co curricular activities clearly and highlight if you find anything relating to the job.
  6. Mention your achievements and give the names and years of the awards which you received.
  7. Finally, give a personal profile of yours which includes your name, your parents name, your date of birth, languages you know, hobbies etc.
